a note from the teachers office. tisk tisk

Hi there,

I hope your day is going well. I just wanted to give you a little heads up that I’ve been talking with Hazel the last few days about walking up the stairs.  I have been putting on my “safety captain” hat and reminding her that her teachers can’t carry her up the stairs while they are trying to also get the rest of the children up safely.  She’s kind of turned it into a bit of a game where she comes in from outside and crawls around the pole in the lobby hoping we will chase her and then goes spaghetti arms and lays at the bottom of the stairs.  Today I was able to spend more time with her (instead of giving in and carrying her up the stairs) and we had a really good talk.  I wanted to be sure to loop you in since I’m sure she’ll let you know that she spent time with me in the office.  At one point she asked me if I could give her an elephant if she used good listening ears.  I told her I’d look into getting some elephant stickers!  After about an hour of discussing safety and the best safety choices including follow directions, she was ready to show me she could be safe.   What she really seemed to respond the most to was understanding that it may hurt her teacher’s back if they have to carry her and that she has strong legs capable of walking.  She such a smart cookie and as you know, can be stubborn at times, so today I really took a lot of time with her and let her know how much I care about her and need her to make better choices during transitions.  I know you will both circle back with her and we appreciate your support as we help her through this phase. I have to say her teachers have been loving, patient and amazing with her during all the observations that I’ve done.

Sincerely,
Carrie Magel
